The ArC of California responds to recent statements on the investigation of autism and the contributions of people with autism.
The ARC of California, a leading organization dedicated to promoting the rights, inclusion and well -being of people with developmental disabilities throughout the State, joins our local and national partners to recognize the rich contributions that people with autism have made to our communities and affirm the importance of understanding based on science and respectful recognition of the autism community.

The secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services of the United States, alarmed us, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who publicly described autism as a «chronic disease» or «epidemic» and declared that children with autism «will never have a job … never write a poem … never come out to date.» Such language encourages stigma and wrong information. In addition, the proposals to reduce vital programs such as Medicaid, Education and Community Services threaten the support that allow Californians with autism to prosper.
«The comments made by Secretary Kennedy Jr. are harmful and frankly fly before reality, especially taking into account thousands of Californians with autism who have jobs and, of course, the appointments continue and find love. As a father, lawyer for an adult son with multiple disabilities, including autism, and the president of the Board of Directors of the Arc de California, Pat Hornbecker declared:
«I am surprised and disappointed that the HHS secretary would promote such erroneous information about people with autism. There are innumerable success stories of people who live complete and significant lives: work, form families and pursue their dreams. It is shameful to discard these achievements. We need leaders who see and support the significant lives of people with disabilities, do not deny them.»
We call the leaders, the media and the public to:
- Maintain scientific integrity and reject wrong information.
- Recognize and celebrate the valuable contributions of people with autism.
- Supports the policies and investments that promote research based on evidence, inclusive education and accessible services.
The California arch remains to promote an inclusive society where each person with disabilities is respected, supported and faculant to achieve its maximum potential.

Established in 1950, the ARC of California promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual disabilities and development and actively supports their total inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lives. The Arc de California provides support and services to thousands of people with disabilities and their families through their 20 chapters throughout the state.
