Introduction
Talk about the pride of the hometown! When I asked a Grizzled Waterman who lives in Smith Island, Maryland, if he would like to accompany me to one of the other nearby villages, he replied: «No, I have been there.» While the brightness in his eyes suggested that the reason for his decision was not taken seriously, the fact is that Smith Island residents in Chesapeake Bay, located in the middle Atlantic region of the United States, promote superiority of his city on the other two.

In addition to being a chauvinist about their small island and even smaller villages, Smith’s islanders are also resistant, self -sufficient and welcoming for visitors.
Despite his name, Smith Island actually consists of three tiny islets, each occupied by a small community. Ewell and Rhodes Point are connected by a short wooden bridge, while Tylerton is alone.
Captain John Smith saw the tiny archipelago during his exploration of Chesapeake Bay in 1608. Some current residents can track their ancestry up to 12 generations to the first settlers.
His unique way of speaking comes from the original settlers. The majority were English and Welsh, and the vestiges of their Elizabethan dialect persist, shaved by touches of colloquialisms of the south and rural Maryland. Soon I realized that «air» means «ours», «why» translates on «road», and «tie-yum» refers to «time.»
Following the start of their ancestors, most men live in the gray waters of the Chesapeake Bay. That means releasing traps or jogging for crabs during spring and summer, and dredging for oysters in autumn and winter.

Locally built work bars often venture long before dawn, returning up to 12 hours later. As the envelope -Secha, pollution and disease exhausted the population of oysters of the bay in recent decades, the economy of the island has come to depend largely on crabs. Together with the hard crabs, Smith Island has become a center of the country’s soft shell crab industry.
The waters are thick with multicolored buoys that swing in the waves, each of which marks a «pot» wire crab. Male crabs are the usual bait, attracting females that come into anticipating a ritual of mating, just to eventually finish on someone’s dish.
Bringing back to the earth, the «peeled» crabs, those who are about to lose their hard roof and become soft shells, are placed in «floats.» Water circulates through large trays to keep crabs alive. As soon as a crustacean throws its shell, it has started and prepared for shipping to a restaurant or market.
Hard crabs face a different destination, although no less fortunate. Some end, which still live, in restaurants not far from the waters where they grew. There they are sprayed with a mixture of spices, steamed until the shells turn from blue to red, they are often washed with cold beer.
Walking or shooting through the three small cities is easy, and rental golf cars are also an easy transport mode. How many places have you visited where two golf cars are passing together constitute the peak time?

Some adventurous visitors explore in Canoa or Kayak. A marked water path system leads through streams (called «guts») that offer panoramic views of the landscape, which consists mainly of marshes and clay floors. They also provide opportunities for close meetings with wildlife, including Heron, Pelicans, Balda Eagles and many other resident and migratory birds. Some visitors hire a fishing boat with striped lubina (rock fish), marine trout, platija and other hunting fish.

Back on the ground, each town is built around a church that acts as a kind of unofficial government and center of community life. While some residents have a vehicle, traffic usually varies between small and none. As a place explained to me in its attractive accent, «the traffic signs do not become AC too.»
In fact, it is not any vehicle for visitors either. Tylerton, only two for four blocks of size, barely requires any transport mode other than feet. A five -minute boat ride took me to Ewell, which is connected to Rhodes Point by an asphalt strip full of potholes of approximately 1.5 miles long that the locals mockingly call «the road.»
The closest to a tourist attraction is a small recently renewed visitors and a cultural museum in Ewell, where exhibitions and an excellent film represent the history, economy and traditions of the island. The 20 -minute presentation portrays the work of the satterine and life on Smith Island, largely related by residents in their own words.
A «should» for visitors is to throw diet in the wind and try the Smith Island cake. It is an imposing delicacy of generally eight or nine thin layers that has been designated as the official dessert of Maryland. The most common is the yellow cake with chocolate glaze, but flavors such as coconut, fig and orange also situate the taste papillae. No matter how good the taste of that unique gift, and that is, for me, the lifestyle of proud people who choose to live in such splendid isolation is the reason enough to visit them.
Smith Island is 12 miles from Crisfield, Maryland. Passenger fermers offer service to the island, approximately a 45 -minute trip. For accommodation, there is an option of several guests.
