«The diet fails us when it comes to this nutrient,» says Ashley Jordan Ferira, Ph.D., RDN, vice president of scientific affairs at mbg in a tiktok video. «It would take 50 glasses of milk a day to get 5,000 IU of vitamin D3. Or how about nine servings of salmon? That’s silly, right?»
And if you’re wondering whether you can get enough of the «sunshine vitamin» by spending time outdoors on a sunny summer day, think again: «Unfortunately, the sun is equally variable,» says Ferira. «And also risky.»
The thing is, many American adults are deficient or insufficient in vitamin D (29% and 41%, to be exact). And if they think that food and sunshine alone are enough to change their vitamin D level, they may be in for a rude awakening when they receive their test results.
